East meets West

Do you have a lot of cousins? Maybe 2nd or 3rd cousins? Well, I have fifth cousins that are spread out across the country and they came out for a family vacation to San Clemente last week. We tried to rally the troops to hang out for coffee or something, but everyone was to busy. Strange, I thought people would want to see some cool family. Then we decided to have dinner at Portillos, and ironically a lot of people and their grandmothers showed up to hang out.

Thanksgiving

The observance of Thanksgiving Day--as a function--has become general of late years. The Thankfulness is not so general. This is natural. Two-thirds of the nation have always had hard luck and a hard time during the year, and this has a calming effect upon their enthusiasm.

-Mark Twain

The thought of Thanksgiving has got me down this year. When I read this quote by Mark Twain, it cheered me up a bit. It has been a tough year, and I just want to eat and skip the thankful part.
And I am serious about eating pie first.

Nicholas' Funeral

It might be odd and morbid to blog Nicholas's funeral, but I really believe that it helps with the family's healing process.

I'm Free

Don't grieve for me, for now I am free.
I'm following the path God has given me.
I took his hand when I heard Him call.
He said, "Child of mine fear nothing at all."
I could not stay another day,
To laugh, to learn, to love, or to play.
I know that we are now apart,
But with my hands, I have touched your heart.
Perhaps my time seemed all too brief.
Don't lengthen it now with undue grief.
Lift your hearts and peace to thee.
God wanted me now, He set me free!

We don't know how, but Brett got pizza AND the ladies! Quite a task for a pizza lover...

And Vince eating pizza one hour after swearing he wouldn't eat pizza for a month.

Goodbye Nicholas

We lost nick Friday October 24, 2008, around 2:30pm. Funeral arrangements have been made. Viewing at Rose Hills on tuesday at 5-8 pm. And a memorial service at 5:30 on Wednesday at Florence Avenue Foursquare Church.

Nick was my cousin and one of my best friends. But with his cancer, he could not survive in the world that we know. He struggled with Ewing Sarcoma for over 25% of his life. I am very sad he is not with us, but I am happy he does not have to suffer in our world any more. He is in heaven right now with his twin sisiters, Jennifer and Andrea. Durning Nick's last days, he said he couldnt wait to go swimming. I remembered that we used to go swimming all the time in the pool and at the beach. Looking back, Nick wasnt able to go swimming for the last few years.

Nick had fought this cancer for a long time. Most people do not survive more than a year. I never wanted to think this day would come, but it was in the back of my mind all the time. I often hung out with Nick a few times a week. A lot of my friends would always ask why I hung out with my cousins all the time. They are a unique bunch and we joke around like a bunch of kids ALL OF THE TIME. It is never a dull moment with the Colombo's.

Nick was a very special person to me. I learned so much from him and I thought of him everyday. When people complain about the everyday mundane tasks of life, I would think of Nick and be appreciative and grateful of my health and family. We can complain about anything, but what is there really to complain about. I learned to value my life, my family and loved ones even more because Nicholas showed me these values.

I will never forget you Nicholas John Colombo.

Life Anew

O ye people, be ye healed
life anew I bring unto ye
o ye people, be ye healed
life anew I bring unto ye
through the Father over all do I thus
life anew I bring unto ye.

-Good Eagle. Dakota Sioux holy man.

What happens when you stick four Colombos and yellow lab coats in a hospital?

...You get the loudest room on the floor...
Nick has been in the hospital for two weeks, and he is supposed to come home in a few days.

And yes...we were wearing those yellow coats backwards. We were getting strange looks from the nurses.

Anthony Colombo

My brother needed a portfolio portrait for when the Fullerton Observer publishes his articles.
I told him to take a shower before the shoot. When I saw him, I didn't even want to ask. Taking a portrait of my brother is like telling a kid with ADHD to settle down. I wanted to kick him in the face, and then send him an invoice.
